How to use keyword matching honestly
- Add only terms you can back up. If you have not used a tool or method, do not add it — interviewers and modern ATS tools both check.
- Prefer terms in context. Keywords are stronger in a bullet than in a dense list. “Built and maintained data pipelines” is a better keyword match than “pipelines”.
- Aim for coverage, not perfection. Matching 70–85% of the top terms is a reasonable target. Trying to match 100% leads to keyword stuffing and unnatural writing.
- Read the job description twice. Terms that appear most often, or in a “Requirements” section, matter more than single mentions.
